Gravel is the classic country house driveway, and properly built it is a beautiful, affordable surface that ages gracefully. The crunch underfoot is a small luxury and the natural look softens into mature planting and brick or stone houses.
The secret to a gravel drive that stays sharp is the base. We build a compacted Type 1 sub base on a heavy duty weed membrane, then top with a generous decorative aggregate so the stones bed in and stop migrating around the drive.
On sloped drives we use cellular gravel grids to lock the stones in place, with timber or stone edging keeping the surface contained.
